Watch Your Words------Speak Life

When we speak, we must be careful how we speak. Why? The answer is actually simple: our words carry power. God tells us throughout His Word to speak life, not curses.

Scripture says:

  • “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”Proverbs 18:21

  • “Bless those who curse you, bless and do not curse.”Romans 12:14

  • “A gentle answer turns away wrath.”Proverbs 15:1

How we speak is often shaped by how we were raised—what was spoken over us at home, at school, or by the people we trusted. Growing up with hurtful words can leave wounds that follow us into adulthood. Many people never fully recover from the trauma of how they were spoken to. But there is help—both from loving people and from the Lord Himself.

God reminds us throughout the Bible to watch our words, even the ones we speak about ourselves. Negative self-talk is just as harmful as harsh words spoken to someone else.

And yes—this includes cussing or speaking in anger. I’ve been there, too. Sometimes I still mess up and say something I shouldn’t. But when I do, the Lord tugs at my heart. I ask Him to forgive me, and I repent. God is merciful and faithful to help us grow.

Jesus took every sin upon Himself on the cross—including our words, our anger, and our mistakes. When we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we become a new creation:

  • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”2 Corinthians 5:17

This new walk takes time. It’s a process. But part of that walk is learning to speak differently—about ourselves, our family, our friends, and our life. God wants us to speak truth and life, the way He speaks over us.
