What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do
Life has moments that leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, confused, or completely lost. Sometimes the situations we face feel bigger than our strength, deeper than our understanding, and heavier than anything we’ve carried before. In those moments, it’s easy to panic, freeze, or fall into worry.
But God never leaves His children without direction. When you don’t know what to do, the Bible gives us clear steps to find peace, guidance, and hope.
1. Pause Instead of Panicking
When uncertainty hits, our minds can start racing. But the first step is to stop and breathe.
Scripture:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Stillness allows God space to speak peace into your situation.
2. Pray Honestly
You don’t need fancy words—just a real conversation with God. Tell Him how you feel, what you fear, and where you’re confused.
Scripture:
“Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3
God promises to answer when we call.
3. Seek God’s Wisdom
Human wisdom is limited. God’s wisdom sees what we cannot.
Scripture:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God… and it will be given to him.” — James 1:5
When you don’t know what to do and you ask God, He will give direction.
4. Go Back to the Word
Confusion clears when we focus on God’s promises, not our fears.
Scripture:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Even if God doesn’t show the whole path, He will give the next step.
5. Take the Next Right Step
You may not know the whole plan, but God will show you one step at a time. Do the next simple thing you do know to do—pray, rest, worship, reach out, or wait.
Scripture:
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6
Trust opens the way for God to guide.
6. Surround Yourself With Encouragement
Don’t try to face confusion alone. Lean on trusted friends, church family, or someone who can pray with you.
Scripture:
“Two are better than one… if one falls, the other can help them up.” — Ecclesiastes 4:9–10
Community brings clarity and support.
7. Trust God’s Timing
Just because you don’t know what to do yet doesn’t mean God isn’t working behind the scenes.
Scripture:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” — Exodus 14:14
Delay is not denial—God is preparing the right answer.
8. Remember Who God Is
When life feels uncertain, God is not. He is still faithful, still present, still powerful, still good.
Scripture:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8
You may not know what to do—but you know Who to trust.
Final Encouragement
When you don’t know what to do, it’s not the end—it's an invitation to draw closer to God. He has not forgotten you. He is guiding even when you can’t see the way. One day, you’ll look back and realize He was carrying you through every step.
